The history of the United Federation of Planets is a vast and storied one. Since the early 22nd century it was an intergalactic leader held in high regard by the people of the Alpha and Beta quadrants. It's military arm, Starfleet, was on the bleeding edge of technology, exploration, and diplomacy. More than once in its past the UFP has averted intergalactic conflict between rivalling sovereign powers like the Klingons and the Romulans. When in 2369 the discovery was made of a stable wormhole in the Bajoran sector it was viewed as an opportunity to spread its wings outside of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Connecting the vast Federation with a sector of space some 70 thousand lightyears away over in the Gamma Quadrant. The UFPs excitement for exploring this new stretch of space waned fast however when Commander Benjamin Sisko encountered the Dominion in early 2370. Tense relations existed between the UFP and the Dominion for some time after this initial encounter when in 2373 the relations deteriorated into a full blown war, with the UFP and the Klingon Empire on one side and the Dominion, now including the Cardassian Union, on the other. A long and bloody war was fought over the course over the next two years. In the latter half of 2374 Starfleet took a huge risk in launching an assault on the Bajoran sector in order to prevent the removal of a minefield blocking the access to the Alpha Quadrant by Dominion forces. As they engaged in the battle they were outnumbered significantly. The tide of the battle seemed to turn as Klingon allies joined the fray. The USS Defiant was able to break through enemy lines and disappeared into the Bajoran Wormhole. Moments later 2800 Dominion vessels emerged from the wormhole, with no sign of the USS Defiant or its crew. The Dominion reinforcements made quick work of the combined Starfleet and Klingon Defense Force fleets. They were forced to retreat, losing the engagement and thousands of lives. The Federation Council ordered the protection of the core worlds in light of these developments. Immediately alienating some of the further outlying member worlds. Many of which immediately seceded and applied for membership to the Dominion in a bid to prevent further loss of life. It took another year, but by the end of 2375 all Starfleet positions had been overrun except for the defensive stance at Sector 001, Earth (as well as the Tellarite homeworld that ignored orders to strengthen the UFP's position on Earth). During two gruesome battles the last remnants of Starfleet fell and Earth was occupied by Dominion forces. The President of the United Federation of Planets, as well as several prominent Federation Council members, were transported to Bajor, where a treaty was signed in which the UFP surrendered unconditionally to the Dominion. The President, as well as all the Federation Council members, were consequently executed back on Earth as a display of power marking the end of the United Federation of Planets after lasting for 214 years.
